Who are Lutherans?

Who are the Lutherans?

Lutherans are part of the one, holy, Christian Church, established by Jesus Christ.  They trace their history back to the time of the Apostles, adhering to the truths revealed in the New Testament.

While they take their name from Martin Luther, the 16th century reformer of the Church, their faith centers in Jesus Christ, the Son of God and only Savior of the world.

Today Lutherans form the largest group among the Protestant bodies of the world, numbering 70 million baptized members, making it one of the largest Protestant church bodies in the world.  In the United States the Lutherans rank fourth in size among the Protestant groups, numbering almost nine million baptized members.

Our congregation is a part of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod which was founded in 1847, is the second largest Lutheran body in North America with 2.6 million baptized members. Its 6,000 congregations are found in all 50 states. Its missionaries are at work in 26 different lands. Under its auspices the Lutheran Hour radio program is dedicated to "Bringing Christ to the Nations€” and the Nations to the Church" in over 54 countries around the world. "Woman to Woman" is nationally syndicated on more than 375 radio stations throughout North America.

What the Lutheran Church Stands For

SCRIPTURE ALONE
We believe that the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, in their entirety and in all their parts, are the inspired Word of God and the only source and norm of faith and life for the Christian. We believe that the Bible is a clear book in which any person of average intelligence and unprejudiced men can find God's plan of salvation. We believe that the Bible is the complete and adequate revelation of God to man and that it requires no additions or subtractions from any source.

FAITH ALONE
We believe that man, originally created holy, fell into sin, lost the image of God and are now by nature spiritually blind and dead in trespasses and sin. Only when he is born again by the Holy Spirit working through the means of grace is it possible for him to enter the kingdom of God. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Faith is God's work, not man's. A man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law (good works).

GRACE ALONE
We believe that we are saved by grace through faith and that not of ourselves, not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8).  Grace is the undeserved love and favor of God who sent His Son into the world to take our place under the Law and to suffer and die for our sins. Now "who ever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16
